What have the fashion houses dictated for this coming year’s jewellery trends?

Well, 2020 was a bit of a flop for the fashion industry. As the fashion weeks were closing around the world, lockdown also shut down the high streets and the hustle and bustle of two selling seasons; Spring and Autumn of this year.

This may be a good thing for our society. Hopefully it makes us more conscious about what we choose to buy. The quality; the longevity and provenance of our clothes and jewellery should be taken in to account when purchasing.

You may think this would have deflated the fashion houses from launching any kind of trends in jewellery for the coming seasons, as we all have limited access to socialising. But thankfully not!

Even the big guns in the business know how good jewellery makes us feel. Jewellery, unlike clothing fashion trends, naturally move slower, especially in the higher end jewellery market. People invest in jewellery and want to wear it for years to come.

Spring Summer 2021 sees a bold celebration of adornment. Chunky Chains produced from Victoria Beckham, representing our strength and mismatched earrings from Dries Van Noten and Alberta Ferretti showing our ability to adapt in these uncertain times.

The designer that trumps all for me this coming season is Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood. Distressed, industrial looking chain; out of the ordinary scaled pendants really reflect the extraordinary times we are living in.

I don’t know about you but even when I’m not leaving the house you can usually find me in my ‘comfys’ with my rings on and earrings, be they a simple stud or hoops. I think the fashion house’s definitely understand our need for jewellery and the comfort it brings us, allowing us to express ourselves and feel ‘dressed’ even in the comfort of our homes.

It was interesting to see that the iconic pearl made it to the catwalk again. The pearl is a classic example of the longevity of jewellery and never wanders too far from its seat in fashion.

Colour was another feature in some of the shows, namely the influence of the sea.

We saw Ferretti, among other designers taking inspiration form the beauty our seas and oceans hold. This emulates positivity and regrowth for the next year. A rebirth almost of our world! Jason Wu layers colours with Pearls and shells.

Pearls are usually set upon a precious pedastool in jewellery design so it was refreshing to see it brought back to its foundation of the sea and mixed with more tribal connotations such as the shells from which they are born.

In essence this coming spring summer trends for jewellery on the catwalk are very reflective of the year we have lived through. They show our strengths, our traditions and our ability to power through and lift our spirits once more to fight together in whatever life throws at us next.

So don’t be afraid to search your jewellery box for inspiration on the down days. Or even better; treat yourself!!
